Ways to make money for Unemployed Teachers

I have been thinking about the experience of an unemployed teacher who will remain anonymous, but who submitted this post.  I woke up from a sleep, driven to make this post to assist him. The first thing that I did was to check out other blogs.  Bad news.  Here’s a typical result:  http://www.proteacher.net/discussions/showthread.php?t=21838. Perhaps after I write it and direct him to the post, I’ll be able to fall back asleep. I think I’ll post a link on that blog to this solution.  Perhaps my ideas will help them too.  Also, if you get a chance check out this site, which I started some time ago, but never kept up. Still, it might help you.

Get Your Hands on a e-book from which you can cut-and-paste and build a presentation that will get you job interviews

Perhaps, I feel this way because I went through a period of unemployment that lasted over two years.  I know what it feels like. I know the “take me or leave me philosophy” that I developed.  I know that I wrote my own survival manual.  In fact, I’m going to offer that manual free to anyone who is reading this post. However, please don’t give it away to others.  Instead, ask them to buy it from http://www.max-opp.com/ejs/.  It’s $19.00.  However, if you post a comment in reply to this site, I’ll allow you to download it for free.  (I know that I e-mailed it to you, but I didn’t receive a reply, so perhaps it was too big for your e-mail.)

Consider Being a Contractor

Check out http://www.Dice.com as an example.  You are like to find that you can market some of your skill sets for at least $30/hour.  (Assuming that you know how to build a small database with Microsoft Access,  or write a really good technical report.  Perhaps you need to position yourself as a Management Analyst or a Process Analyst.

Tutoring

If you can do tutoring over the web, that will be great.  You can do this on your own using http://www.DimDim.com, http://www.Webex.com, or http://www.GoToMeeting.com, or you can contract with one of the companies that use tutors.  Search for tutors and tutoring on this web site, and you’ll find some of them. There are companies out there that are looking for good tutors.

Prepare Lesson Plans, and we Will Market Them

This is a long shot, and it will take a while to get up to speed, but I’ll give you 75% of the gross profit (sales price less direct costs such as PayPal fees) assuming that I don’t have to spend a lot of time editing your work.  Look at the response that you sent me, below, and you’ll see why this is a concern.  If I have to spend considerable time editing (or hire someone to do this) then your payout would be lower.  I have the technology in place to allow you to sell these Lesson Plans and get paid immediately upon their sale.  Money will be deposited directly into your  PayPal account, and you’ll be able to spend it immediately.  It will take some effort, but you can do this.

Write a Book / Audio Book / e-Book and Earn Immediate Royalties

It’s possible to use FastPencil* to write and market a book, and there are other sources such as http://www.scribd.com, http://www.smashwords.com, http://www.lulu.com, which will enable you to make income from them relatively quickly. What I like about FastPencil is that you can actually turn your blog into a real book and/or an e-book.  RoughCutUneditedPreviewOfMaximumOpportunity (Note that this e-book has both live hyperlinks (most chapters) and text–see Chapter 7.)  This is just an example.

My experience is that if you can write a series of information-based books, you can make money quickly.  Novels, short-stories, and poetry are a crap shot.  It’s true that I’m doing a novel and book of poetry now (see http://www.Harmony123.com) , and I expect to make money from it, but it’s also true that I don’t expect to make any money from it for at least a year.  Also, it has taken me four years to develop a strategy that will enable me to make money from writing it.

Be a contributing author and/or Editor and/or Marketing Person for this site.

There will be no upfront cash, but I’ll share some of the revenue that comes out of this site with you, assuming that we arrive at a mutually agreeable formula in advance.  To see the revenue potential for a blog take a look at this series of articles on a child blog on this site.  I can suggest that you check out the Stump Markus Internet Radio show* to hear advice on how to develop marketing skills on the web.  I’ve been listening to Markus for about 18 months now, and I’m impressed. Caution:  As Markus would say, the hardest thing to do on the Internet is to make your first dollar.  After that, it’s not so bad.  That first dollar can take years.  (Ask me how I know.  :) )  Here is a link to a [post that offers  one of his videos, http://max-opp.com/teachers/want-to-tutor-heres-how-to-launch-a-website-that-gets-traffic *

Teachers, keep those checking flowing.  Here’s the advice of Robin Ryan, the bestselling author of Over 40 & You’re HiredWinning Résumés and 60 Seconds & You’re Hired. A career counselor, she provides individual job search services, résumé writing and interview coaching to clients nationwide. Robin Ryan has appeared on more than 1,000 TV and radio
shows, including: Oprah, Dr. Phil, Fox News, and CNN. Find more job search
help, her blog, and free newsletter at: www.RobinRyan.com.  Here’s her advice for teachers who are concerned about the economic situation affecting them.

“Most educators are not laid off until summer, so teachers can look for a summer job if they find themselves out-of-work during this period. The best opportunity for a laid-off teacher is tutoring; this can be a lucrative job, paying anywhere from $30 to $50 per hour. There is demand in all subjects and at all grade levels for tutors, from grades 1 through 12.

Educators will make the most money working for themselves. Use word-of-mouth to find business, getting the word out through your students and their parents. Ask them to pass your name along to their friends and you’ll soon have more work than you can handle.

Other summer jobs an educator can take to make extra money include: nanny work and vacation, child care, house sitting, dog walking, and yard work, such as installing
sprinklers, gardening and planting.”

Laid off Teacher – Solutions?

I received this e-mail, and I’m not going to post the teacher’s name, but I have not edited it at all.  If he wants to respond, he can enter a comment.  Otherwise, he’ll remain anonymous. However, if you can offer any suggestions, please enter them as a comment.

Im a professor of philosophy currently unemployed because of enrollment and the soonest prospect for work is not until September.  NYS dept of labor will not even recognize the fact I am unemployed and therefore I am unable to collect unemployment.  Ive juggled 2 and sometimes 3 jobs on top of my teaching schedule.  Its a must. I cant possible live on Long Island making $150/week per course.  My jobs have ranged from cleaning bathrooms at NYC nightclubs after closing to selling auto-parts.  I have no health insurance, benefits, and no job security.  My salary is embarrassing.  A good portion of my students make more money than me.  Im fantastic at my job, if not the best at the university.  I have the highest rating in the dept for 5 consecutive years.   The insecurity of my job, unfair wages, and lack of benefits, has made it necessary for me to work outside my field.  My income is dependent on work outside my field.
Thats just the beginning of the story….

Teacher – Physics Job

Friday, May 14th, 2010

This came in by e-mail.  It seems to me that this is one talented guy. Anyone with suggestions on how to help, please leave a comment. My comments are embedded in the post.

Hi Mr. Jordan,

Last year I was laid off after teaching physics, conceptual physics, AP physics, geometry, and algebra at a private school. This year, though I’m working, my pay is about half what it was and the hours have nearly doubled.

Throughout the year, I’ve sought alternative sources of income that don’t require much time. Here’s what I’ve made money in:

1. Physics consultant to analyze a Richard Feynman lecture for a book to be published,

2. Paid intern at Lockheed Martin to help design a defense missile,

3. Designer for a graphic design project,

4. Videographer and editor for a video memoir,

5. And musician selling my CDs of original songs on-line.

My biggest difficulty with getting a job is that, though I have a teaching credential in physics, my BA is in music, not physics.

Ezra,

Music and physics have a lot in common.  String theory, in fact, is based on a musical instrument.  I’m sure you can draw many parallels.  Probably all you need to do is to pinpoint the advantages of hiring you in sixteen second bursts (2-rings of a phone)  Check out http://www.greatjobinterviews.com.  Remember, as someone who has contributed to my blog, you have the right to request a free copy by making a comment.

I also think you might look into on-line tutoring.  Check out the lady who runs Felicity Tutors, at the bottom of this post. http://max-opp.com/teachers/summer-slide-four-ways-to-avoid-it-boost-childrens-literarc.

Also, do you know about CD Baby?  I use them to sell CDs. They might be a great fit for you.

Teachers Who Are Concerned About Work

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

I am interested in interviewing teachers who are concerned about being laid off, or who are otherwise concerned with being out of work, or who are looking for or have found additional sources of income.  Feel free to comment
